Learn MoreTucked among the towering sycamores along the banks of the Hocking River, The Cove should definitely be on your short list for destinations. This cozy shaded area is an easy walk from all of Hideaway’s properties and is the perfect place to take in the natural beauty of our area. Located along part of the Riverwalk, this area has an authentic millstone table for a picnic lunch, large boulder fire pit, and The Little House from the Dairy set atop an old railroad bridge foundation. Sights and sounds of the river’s rapids will lull you to sleep in one of the hammocks that hang from the tall trees, while the winding riverside trail with a different view of the water around each turn beckons you to explore. The old bridge foundation that still stands today anchors the space and hints to the rich history along this stretch of the Hocking and serves as a beacon to our kayaking guests, letting them know that they have arrived!
The Hocking River
With the Hideaway property surrounded on three side by the Hocking River, there are plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy this quiet stretch of water.
Learn MoreTake your morning coffee with you on a stroll through the Riverwalk, Hideaway’s mile-long trek alongside the river. Navigate a kayak through this isolated stretch of tree-lined river. Take a picnic lunch down to The Cove where an authentic millstone picnic table offers views of the river’s small rapids below. Once the sun sets, cast a line and try your luck at one of the river’s giant catfish. The Summit Loop
Rock formations and a panoramic view of the Southeast Ohio foothills are worth the 2-mile trek along Summit Loop.
Learn MoreGood things come to those who gait! Summit Loop is so much more than it even sounds. Yes, you end up at The Summit, the highest point on the Hideaway property with views that go on for miles, but that’s only the beginning. Despite being in the family for over 147 years, the property had hidden treasures we never knew about until we started clearing trails for the Hideaway project. Tucked just off the Summit Loop, behind some brush, a rock formation was discovered. The teepee entrance to this shallow cave / rock formation is big enough to WALK into and snap a photo. The rock all around this grand entrance fills out the hillside and frames this picture-perfect entrance. This big daddy rock formation is echoed along the Summit Loop with smaller patches of rocks along the way, one that we’ve affectionally coined Rock City. These stones date back 450 MILLION years ago to a time when this entire area was under seawater, evidenced by the honeycomb looking salt deposits left in these rocks. This 2-mile loop is worth every step … and remember …what goes up, must come down! The trek back to Hideaway is pretty much all downhill!
Storybook Trail
A colorful story beckons Hideaway's youngest guests along Storybook Trail to a whimsical ending.
Learn MoreOnce upon a time, a young family took a walk in the woods. One by one, they came upon colorful pages from a storybook, weaving a tale that had them anxious to get to the next page. At the end of the story, they found themselves at a whimsical hideout with the lush landscape on full display!
Hideaway’s Storybook Trail completes the first half of the Storybook Loop and is an easy hike for most of our guests. Written by Cindy Hayes and brought to life through the playful illustration of Tracy Dawn Brewer, this story will have our youngest hikers looking at history and the landscape around them in a different light … and they all lived happily ever after. The End.
The Sundowner Hideout
Set on the hilltop overlooking the Hideaway property below, The Sundowner is the picture-perfect place to take in the evening's sunset.
Learn MoreVisible from below, The Sundowner, is always a bit of a mystery to the Hideaway guests. A white box on the back wall of this three-sided hut beckons from above. This small wooden hideout does not disappoint and confirms that good things really do come in small packages. A comfy sofa with chaise invites you into this cozy space and warm boho decor reflects back the sunsets that fill the sky at dusk, but nothing compares to the large wall mirror that reflects the view beyond….literally. The panoramic view from The Sundowner frames all of Hideaway’s cabins and cabooses, community pavilion, Sanctuary Pond and the landscape beyond. Two comfy Adirondak chairs and picnic table set under the shadows of the loaded pear tree provide enough seating for all to come and enjoy the nightly show that never gets old. Each and every night, a new episode fills the wide-open country sky!
Hayes Maize
Guests can pick fresh corn, tomatoes and flowers from our community garden, Hayes Maize, for the ultimate farm-to-table experience possible.
Learn MoreFor nearly 150 years, corn stalks have taken over the summer fields at the Hayes Family Farm. Whether field corn for the livestock or sweet corn for a country dinner, fresh corn is always on the menu. Hideaway’s guests are welcome to harvest the produce from our community garden, Hayes Maize. Here you will find three varieties of sweet corn that will be ready for picking at different times throughout the summer months, typically early July through early-September. Enter the flower-lined garden and find the row with the “Pick Me! Pick Me!’ sign, gather enough for your summer meal, go back to your cabin or caboose and drop it in a pot of boiling water or prepare it over a wood fire for the ultimate farm-to-table experience. What’s a garden without tomatoes, right? While you’re in the garden, feel free to pick a few tomatoes to complete your farm-fresh meal and a bouquet of bright flower to adorn your summer table!
Riverwalk
The Riverwalk trail winds guests through a mile-long green stretch along the banks of the Hocking River.
Learn MoreRiverwalk, one of Hideaway’s five trails, leads guests along the banks of the Hocking River under a canopy of trees. Towering sycamores that cantilever out over the water, wide maples that house our resident wildlife and paw paw trees overloaded with late-summer fruit, are all rooted on the banks of the river. Mallard ducks, Canadian Geese, blue heron, otters and even our resident eagles all travel along this waterway. The path winds through The Cove where hammocks, picnic tables and other natural surprises beckon. One of our favorites? Hideaway’s very own Keebler Tree. Although the elves have long gone, you might just find one of the miniature cows that now occupy this tree. Grab your morning coffee and head out on this level mile-long path that ends at River Road, where guests can quickly walk back to their rentals or continue across the gravel road to explore other the Hideaway trails.
Sunflower Field
Brighten your day wandering and harvesting sunflowers from this cheerful field.
Learn MoreIn late summer, Hideaway’s fields of green turn gold! Thousands of sunflowers bloom in this three-acre meadow just below the cabooses. Guests can wander the path through the flowers, create fun photo memories and take some home! These tall yellow beauties can’t help but make any day better. This cozy hideout sits just on the edge of The Ol’ Hayes Farm Pond, a decades old farm pond stocked with blue gills, bass and catfish, just waiting for a game of catch with our guests! A row of towering pines across the pond, stand guard over a hammock and picnic table making it a great place to take a break. Accessible from the Eagle’s Path trail or by car, The Angler also gives a panoramic view of the original 1877 Hayes family farmhouse across the field.

Learn MoreThe Summit lives UP to its name in all ways! Set at one of the highest points on the Hideaway property, the panoramic view goes on and on and on. This rustic wooden lean-to serves as a 100 square foot window to the Southeast Ohio foothills below. Outfitted with two loungers and ottomans, a handful of nature books for identifying the greenery and birds that surround this tiny escape, and binoculars, it’s easy to relax away an afternoon. Bring a picnic, bottle of wine, an engagement ring … all are perfect accessories for this cozy hideout. Accessible from The Summit Loop trail, it’s a bit of a climb, but worth every step. This hideout is available to all of Hideaway’s guests but can also be reserved for a private picnic or sunset toast. Please reach out to us at [email protected] for more information.
The Ol’ Hayes Farm Pond
This decades old farm pond, framed by a grove of pines, is the perfect place to cast a line or hide away for a bit.
Learn MoreThis scenic farm pond does not disappoint. Rarely fished until now, blue gills and feisty bass can be seen from the water’s edge. As you walk the edge of the pond, a small army of frogs take dive ahead of your impending steps. Fuzzy cattails provide a natural buffer around the edge of the water and beyond. With a picnic table, hammock, fire pit and The Angler hideout scattered around the pond, there are so many ways to enjoy this nostalgic retreat. Didn’t bring a fishing pole? Hideaway offers a Fishing Package so you can just bait and cast. As the famous quote goes, “Fishing is not so much getting fish, as it is a state of mind”.
The Eagle’s Nest
Visit our resident eagles' nest alongside the Hocking River.
Learn MoreFor the last decade or so, the Hayes Family Farm has been lucky enough to have a few resident eagles lay claim to a tall sycamore tree alongside the Hocking River. These majestic birds cycle back year after year, gracing us with glimpses of their young, before the eaglets fly the nest. The river serves as their main route of travel as they search for food, and they are often seen scouting their next meal from the bare branches of the towering trees along the banks. Hideaway guests can drive or hike our Eagle’s Path trail these regal birds call home. Even if they are out at the moment, it’s always amazing to stand beneath this tall sycamore and realize just how big the eagle’s nest really is!
Storybook Loop
Pages of a colorful story lead guests along the first half of this whimsical trail, while an intriguing wooden bridge introduces the second half of this picturesque loop.
Learn MoreThis mile-long whimsical loop is a journey in and of itself! Butterflies dance around the orange flowering plants, spongey white mushrooms dot the mossy tree trunks and red hammocks sit along the babbling creek, creating a sensory feast for all kids … including the young at heart! Storybook Loop is a great trail accessible to most with its short distance and relatively easy terrain. The color pages of our Storybook Trail lead guests along the first half of the loop, ending at The Happily Ever After, a cozy shelter for our hikers. Crossing over our wooden bridge, the second half of the Storybook Loop takes you closer to the rocks and little caves that canopy out over the creek. Just a short walk from the Hideaway property, this is one destination not to miss!
Little House from the Dairy
Originally located on the Hayes Family (Dairy) Farm, this tiny "house" of windows gives guests a unique place to stop along the line as they journey the property.
Learn MoreSet atop an old railroad bridge support, this little house is an eclectic mix of Hayes history. The mullioned windows along the front came from the 1890 train depot that now sits on the Hideaway property. The rusted roof is a remnant of a 100-year old barn torn down on the property a few years ago. The picnic table on the front stoop? An authentic millstone, much like the ones used in the riverside feed mils that once stood along The Hocking River’s bank a century ago. Up until 1987, trains ran right through the cozy interior of this quirky repurposed building. Having been moooved from a piece of land on the Hayes farm, she was christened, Little House from the Dairy, hence her moo-moo decor. For ____ years, the Hayes Family made its living milking cows and enjoying the quirky nature of this grass-fed gals!
Pine Grove Loop
Pine Grove Loop, with a variety of natural points of interest, is a fun place to climb, dine or simply unwind.
Learn MorePine Grove Loop is rooted in Hayes family history. This diverse loop apexes at The Pine Grove, a small collection of pines planted by this farm family 50+ years ago. The trail to this point has something for everyone. A pair of extra-large prehistoric rock flatten out on top, creating the perfect place to take a break and admire the view from Lookout Point. Once you come round the other side of Pine Grove Loop, you find The Playground, a collection of large rocks that beg to be explored. All children and kids at heart are drawn into the area by the massive tree that anchors this area, but quickly called to explore the large boulders that dot the landscape. A table for one is seemingly built into one of these large rocks, alongside a rock seat that makes this the perfect mini-picnic spot. With a little imagination, this area can be anything you want it to be. A tyrannosaurus rex, elephant’s trunk and tiger’s eye have all been spotted in these rock faces.
It’s a bit of a climb to get to The Pine Grove, but with natural attractions popping up along the way, you’ll be easily distracted!
Eagle’s Path Trail
Eagle's Path takes guests along a quiet riverside trail that follows the path of our majestic, resident birds.
Learn MoreFollowing the edge of the Hocking River, Eagle’s Path winds its way from Hideaway on the Hocking to a large, burled nest set in an imposing sycamore tree. This disheveled nest serves as home base to our resident eagles who travel this two-mile stretch of water every day. Throughout the day, the ambiance changes; a morning walk may find you looking down on a blanket of fog rising from the still river, the afternoon sun often highlights kayakers floating in the water, while the evening’s sunsets cast a golden hue to the water below. Bordered on one side by the quiet water and on the other by farmland, it’s easy to feel like you’re the only one on the planet on a quiet morning.

The Pine Grove
A grove of towering pines serves as the perfect backdrop for a picnic.
Learn MoreFifty plus years ago, on a Sunday afternoon following the morning’s chores, Jim and Shirley Hayes, took their two young boys to an empty field up behind their farmhouse for a picnic. Being raised on a dairy farm where cows were milked 365 days a year didn’t present many opportunities for a family vacation, so these weekend adventures were often the highlight of the week. After the picnic, the Hayes family spent the afternoon planting pine tree saplings in this vacant field. Each year, the boys would watch as these pines grew taller and taller, recognizing each additional year by a rung on the tree’s trunk. Today, this towering patch of pines with a lot of history behind it, is still a great place for a picnic. The Hayes Family and the Hideaway team have placed a picnic table among these pines. Set near the top of the Pine Grove Loop trail, guests can head to the top and make their own memories, their own history, just like the Hayes family did many years ago.

Through seven generations of the Hayes family, farming has been a way of life and inspires this rustic barn-red space with a bounty of texture and color. Y’all come back now, ya hear?
